Hello everyone, and welcome to a new dev diary! This week we are going to look at the user interface for Horror at Adesaw: Initiation. Behold! Beautiful color and a plethora of new features! After the jump, let's talk a little bit more about the stylistic choices, and some hints on those new systems... Horror at Adesaw: Now in T E C H N I C O L O R
One of the two most obvious differences in the above .gif is the inclusion of color in the UI. Prologue was meant to be a very dark, solitary and even oppressive game. Using pure black and white really helped achieve this effect and gave you a feeling of being totally alone (aside from stalking eldritch terrors). This type of minimalism doesn't lend itself well to Initiation. In Initiation, you will be playing as a student attending Adesaw University, which means you'll be in an environment that is far richer and filled with other characters to interact with. I wanted to help reflect this by updating to a color palette that is familiar but more vibrant at the same time. Instead of using pure black, the main world screen is "raisin black" AKA slightly off-black. Also, we added a deep red and eggshell white to the navigation and menu bars, which is inspired by the school colors of my alma mater, Waseda University. Speaking of the navigation drawer... A New Drawer to Wrangle New Systems As I've mentioned in previous DDs, Adesaw will be changing directions from a pure interactive fiction story to a full fledged text based RPG. I made this change for several reasons, but I think that design decision is best left for a different update ;) Needless to say, the user will need a way to quickly and easily access all these new systems, so the navigation drawer was born. But who cares about some navigation drawer! Almost every app has one of those! More interesting is whats inside the nav drawer. We're going to keep this very brief to build some excitement, and obviously I need to have something interesting to talk about in future weeks. But a few things should be noted:
And that's it for today! Over the next few weeks, we'll occasionally go into more detail about each of these systems and what they'll do.
