Hello and welcome back to our second DD, which will be released every Thursday (Japan Time) from now on. Toady, we're going to be look a little bit more in depth about the general concept for our new series, NEON DARK. The Setting
NEON DARK takes place during the 22nd century in East Asia. After decades of turmoil following the collapse of the global economy, Japan has reverted to a collection of competing territories vying to revive a Bakufu military government to unite the island once again. An uneasy peace exists between the the three great city-states of Neo-Edo, Kyoto, Nagoya Central, bringing some semblance of stability to a blood-soaked region. Beyond Japan, vast social upheavals have reordered the geopolitical landscape. An emperor has retaken the Mandate of Heaven from corrupt Communist officials in China, the Koreas have reunified into a hyper-capitalist dictatorship, and what was one known as the United States has been divided into three separate political entities. The world is one defined by uncertainty and fear, and international relations has become a series of industrial espionage wars, as mega-corporations take control of the levers of power and compete against each other much in the same way as nation-states did in the past. The Character You are a private investigator operating out of a Class 4 district in the bowels of Neo-Edo, taking whatever job you can get. Most of it revolves around low-priority crime and petty vendettas, but you occasionally catch bigger tags from former SDF comrades serving out their remaining conscription contract behind a desk. The jobs they give you are almost always dirty -- category 3 and 4 crime that always ends up bloated with the corruption and graft no self-interested cop would risk their pension for. For a family man, everything to lose and nothing to gain; for you, nothing left to lose except a fat credit payout. Gameplay In broad strokes NEON DARK will play out as a interactive fiction story with a clear beginning, middle and end. The game will revolve around your character being contracted ('getting tags' in the local dialect) by the Neo-Edo police to work a series of murders. As you solve the murders, there will be opportunities to learn more about the game world, the history, and the society in Neo-Edo. This will include being able to travel to different locations between murder investigations, which may help you solve the mystery central to the story. As with all games at Doc Fishopolis Ops, the game will be primarily text based, although there may be some static images to build immersion. And that's all I've got for today! We've barely scratched the surface of NEON DARK's story, so stay tuned for future dev diaries. Next week, we'll talk a little about the programming work I've been doing to build the dialogue system that will be used in NEON DARK and Horror at Adesaw: Initiation.
