Wow! I'm slightly ashamed to say, but it's been nearly a full three months since the last blog post here at Fishopolis Ops. Life has a funny way of completely ripping your attention away from your hobbies when....well, having to deal with 'life' stuff. In the last few months I've completed graduate school in Japan, moved to the opposite end of the world, and dealt with the inherent headache of setting up life in a new city i.e. apartment hunting, furniture buying, job begging, friend finding, ad infinitum. Needless to say that is (mostly) behind me! I'm about all settled in the strangely always-sunny weather of Southern California, and cackling to myself as friends are forced to trudge through the freezing, wintry months. Hopefully this means I'll have some more time to devote to game development, and to keep you all aware of the progress being made. With that, let's make this a very long post to make up for lost time. After the jump, I'll discuss the latest update to Prologue, the google play store, and some general information on what's happening with Initiation and NEON DARK Prologue Update and a big Thank You
What better way to celebrate my return than an update? Horror at Adesaw: Prologue version 1.7 is a minor update that solely focuses on fixing some outstanding text bugs. I'd like to give major props to gamer "Sei" who pointed out most of these issues and prompted the update in the first place. All of these bugs revolved around me forgetting to put a special command before any apostrophe in the game, which causes text to not display fully. Hopefully, there will be no more errors after this! It is so awesome to know there are passionate people out there for Horror at Adesaw. Really, it's an inspiration whenever someone reaches out to me via email to ask questions about the game, make comments, or just say hello. I've noticed an uptick in these emails over the last month, and it's actually helped push me to get back into developing these games. So I must give a huge, gigantic, tremendous thank you to all of you, the users who enjoy my work! Google Play Reviews and Downloads Prologue is still getting a steady drip of downloads, which has seemed to pick up a little over the last month. Maybe Halloween and the cold season has driven some extra players wanting to dive deep into the horrors of the unknown? I'm happy to report we broke the 10 review threshold on Google Play, yay! It seems the majority of people do not leave a review after playing the game, so I want to give a huge thank you to those that have. It means a lot to hear your honest feedback and of course more ratings help spread the Good Word of Adesaw. Something I've noted is a lot of people report being stuck in the review -- Ideally I'd like to have the reviews about the actual game and not being stuck so I'm working on a solution to fix this. As most people seem to want to communicate with me via email and not Twitter/my homepage, I will probably be releasing another update soon-ish that adds a button to email me directly from the game app. On a final note, we are very close to getting 200 downloads! If we maintain the current daily download rate, we should hit that milestone in the next week or so. When are you releasing a new game??!?!?!!!???! Yes, yes, the most difficult of all questions for a game dev to answer. The answer is I have no idea whatsoever. First, Initiation. Hopefully I can really get going on this and speed up the development progress, but the truth is that Initiation is introducing some systems that are currently too advanced for me to implement. This mostly revolves around data management as there will be much more in the way of dialogue and scripted events and I need to figure out a more efficient way to store this information. This requires a lot of research and tinkering, and progress will be slow until I get these systems into place. Next, NEON DARK. NEON DARK is in an interesting system where is partially easier and partially more difficult that Initiation for completely different reasons. As far as coding is concerned, I think NEON DARK will be easier as it will be much easier and more straightforward to store information. However, it will be more difficult because it is very much a new idea with systems I am completely making up in my own head. Unlike Adesaw, which is heavily influenced by Horror in the Dark and Persona, NEON DARK is something I am making up mostly unaided. That means designing gameplay mechanics that are unique from most android experiences. There will definitely be a heavy lean on interactive fiction, but the way the game loop works will be very difference from Adesaw. That's all I have for now! My hands are tired and I've given you too much to read already. Let's not wait three months for the next update!!!
