Hello all and welcome to yet another Dev Diary! This week, we'll mostly be doing a progress report, rather than a description of an upcoming feature. This week, I've been mostly working on Initiation's dialogue and tutorial system! But these systems will also be deployed to NEON DARK, so it's relevant to both games^^ Click read more to find out more... One of the major changes between Prologue and Initiation will be the inclusion of other characters. Prologue was a very lonely game where your character navigated through a gameworld completely devoid of other life (although it contained darker forces....). That was fine for the purposes of Prologue, which introduced basic systems and was designed to be a very solitary, claustrophobic experience.
In Initiation, this will totally change. You are no longer spending a single night in your parent's basements, but rather spending an entire semester going to school at Adesaw University. As we all know (or at least I hope we do -__-), Colleges are full of people! Professors, students, administrators, staff workers, etc., it would be impossible to have a game that occurs at a university devoid of other characters. With this in mind, Adesaw will have an entirely new game mechanic that will be driven by a dialogue system. This system will mostly work like any standard JRPG game. Certain areas will be filled with characters, who may move from one area to another. Those characters can be talked to, and they will have text relevant to what's happening in the game. Some of the characters will just be 'flavor,' but others will be central to the main plot. Furthermore, you will be able to befriend some of these characters, which will give you benefits over time. For those familiar with the persona series, that's a pretty good frame of reference for what the goal of Adesaw will be (albeit much simpler because I am a single person team and not particular expert at coding). So far, I've created the basic dialogue system. It can receive lists of strings based on a set of conditions, and will output nice dialogues for you to read. It's still very much a WIP, but the basic mechanics are down. It needs to be formatted to be 'prettier' and maybe we'll add some images for the main characters, but that's all down the line. However, now the the coding part has been taken care of (as of today!) I can start actually writing all that beautiful text. What about NEON DARK, you say? Well NEON DARK will also use this system, but that game will have much more dialogue, and will be more novelistic in nature. A lot of the systems I'm building in Adesaw will be migrated to NEON DARK, so for the next couple months you won't hear much from that. That's all for today! Next week, we'll talk about...uh, I'm not totally sure. Maybe the time system? The weather system? Oh! I've said too much....
